Investigation of reactivation of thyssenkrupp Galmed

Due to increased demand a possible reactivation of the hot-dip galvanizing line in Sagunto, Spain, is currently being investigated.

The thyssenkrupp Galmed hot-dip galvanizing line in Sagunto near Valencia was shut down in 2013. Low capacity utilization as a result of the economic crisis and consolidation of our plant capacities under BiC Reloaded led to this decision three years ago.

Recently there has been an increase in demand from various sectors for hot-dip galvanized steel sheet, which thyssenkrupp Steel Europe AG produces at several sites. For example, the trend in the European automotive industry has been very positive lately, as reflected in the number of new car registrations in Europe. New registrations in 2015 were up by around nine percent from the prior year. Demand for hot-dip galvanized products is also growing in other sectors. Against the background of this clear improvement in the overall situation thyssenkrupp Steel Europe and thyssenkrupp Galmed are currently investigating the possibility of reactivating the hot-dip galvanizing line. All deliberations take account of the interests of the former plant employees. To this end, talks are being held with all relevant codetermination bodies.
